PASSANO I SOLDATI

THE SOLDIERS GO BY

Country: Italy
Year: 2001
Duration: 58'

This documentary reconstructs the story of a son - the director — who gradually becomes aware of the past experiences his father, Carlo Gasparini, as he interviews Revelli, Rigoni Stern and other friends of his father and views the images of his father's journeys in Russia as well as never-before-seen Soviet archival material. This process begins with a complete lack of communication, travels a long road, and comes to a deep "mutual understanding" that manages to surmount diverging ideas and life choices.

"When my father died, I inherited his archive of war memoirs. He was a soldier, an Alpine trooper, for seven years. He fought the campaigns in France and Albania and went through the retreat in Russia. He was one of the few who returned alive from that defeat" (Luca Gasparini).
