Chris Cole was born to play rock. His girlfriend Emily believes in him and his talent, but Chris lives in the shadow of Bobby Bears, the lead player of his favorite band, Steel Dragon. He does odd jobs during the day, lives a normal life, but at night he plays lead for Blood Pollution, Steel Dragon's cover band, and identifies with his idol. The rest of the band begins to question his leadership and Chris finds himself out of the band. He is desperate until he receives an unexpected phone call: he is asked to replace Bobby Bears as lead player of Steel Dragon.

Stephen Herek
Stephen Herek was born in 1958 in San Antonio, Texas. After studying at the University of Austin, he debuted in cinema with the very successful Critters (1986). After a series of comedies that were popular with younger audiences, he directed The Three Musketeers (1993) with Charlie Sheen and Kiefer Sutherland. He worked with Disney on Goodbye Mr. Holland (1995) and 101 Dalmations (1996). Rock Star is his tenth feature film.
