SIGNORINA FIAT

MISS FIAT
by Giovanna Boursier
Country: Italy
Year: 2001
Duration: 31'

We see the human and professional experiences of Maria Teresa Arisio, an office worker at Fiat in Turin from 1961 to 1994. Her father was an office worker at Mirafiori. As a child she went to Fiat summer camps and received a present from Fiat every Christmas. For her, beginning to work for Fiat as an adult was the fulfillment of a dream. She identified with the company. She took part in the march of the 40,000 on October 14, 1980, which resulted in unemployment for 23,000 workers while the managers and office workers returned to work quietly. They kept on working until January, 1994, when a new restructuring of the company struck the office workers too and 3,000 employees, including Maria Teresa Arisio, were fired. It was then that Maria Teresa began to understand, went back in her thoughts, and changed her mind.

"I met Maria Teresa Arisio during the shooting of Mimmo Calopresti's Tutto era Fiat. Her story and her way of telling it struck me right off. It was as if she were talking of a love affair, hers for Fiat, who had betrayed and abandoned her" (Giovanna Boursier).
