In an indeterminate place enclosed by four very high walls there live "World," an enormous man, and "Third," a very skinny little man. The walls do not have any doors, windows or roofs. There is only a dumbwaiter, and an enormous branch of a pine tree with a single pinecone towers above it in the sky.

The pinecone falls every day and every morning it is magically hanging from the branch again. This pinecone is the central element of the story. This, in fact, represents the only possession of Third, who nourishes himself on its pine nuts and so keeps himself well. In this way he pits his own frugality against the unrestrained consumerism of World, who has a kind of 'pass' hanging from his neck that allows him to get anything that he wants from the dumbwaiter" (Daniele Pignatelli).
