30° TORINO FILM FESTIVAL
ONDE/MIGUEL GOMES

AQUELE QUERIDO MÊS DE AGOSTO

OUR BELOVED MONTH OF AUGUST
by Miguel Gomes
Country: Portugal
Year: 2008
Duration: 150'

Arganil, a mountainous and fairly uninhabited region in central Portugal, comes back to life during the month of August, as it fills up with people and events. Those who left in search of work return, and the small towns become the setting for festivals, fireworks, games with fire, karaoke matches, boar hunting expeditions and diving from the bridges. The people sing, drink beer, make children, weave little stories in which reality and fiction blend and mesh together to the sweet rhythm of the endless music that makes entire towns dance.

Declaration

film director

“In July 2006, there was a minor catastrophe. Shooting of the film, scheduled for the following month, had to be postponed indefinitely. Production funds were short for a demanding screenplay, due to be shot in Portugal’s interior during the August fiestas. Quickly getting over that shock, I decided to set off for the location anyway, with a 16mm camera and a crew of five and film everything I deemed worthy of recording, committing myself to rejigging the fiction accordingly.”
