30° TORINO FILM FESTIVAL
ONDE/MIGUEL GOMES

ENTRETANTO

MEANWHILE
by Miguel Gomes
Country: Portugal
Year: 1999
Duration: 25'

Two boys and a girl spend some time together; they go to a rugby match, they go to a party, they go to the seaside. The equilibrium between them is unstable; Rui seems to be in love with both Rita and with Nuno, whereas Rita is closed up inside her interior world. Their inability to communicate crystallizes the romantic tension into a moment of endless suspension.

Declaration

film director

“Often, my films are based on an image rather than on a rational element. Entretanto was born during a plane trip; I was looking out of the window while Doris Day singing Que sera, sera was playing over the intercom. At that moment, I realized I wanted to start a film that way; I still didn’t know which way it would go, but that’s how I wanted it to begin, almost leavening. Only later did I realize that it was a film about adolescence, but it all started from a concrete image.”
