KEBUN BINATANG

POSTCARDS FROM THE ZOO
by Edwin
Country: Indonesia
Year: 2012
Duration: 96'

Lana grows up in a zoo after her father abandons her there when she was a little girl. The zookeepers take care of her and all around her are animals, cages and subjugated nature. The unexpected arrival of a young and charming cowboy, an expert prestidigitator, changes everything. Lana falls in love with him, becomes his assistant and, for the first time ever, leaves the zoo. But her happiness is short-lived: during a performance, the illusionist disappears in a cloud of smoke, leaving Lana alone and lost. The girl ends up working in a red-light massage salon, in a world that is very different from the one she grew up in. The only thing for her to do is to leave it all behind and return to the only home she has ever known.

Declaration

film director

“The world ‘postcards’ comes from the way I myself perceive cinema. I enjoy fragmentary films that are able to break free from their own structures, films that allow the viewer to exit the narrative, invoking or triggering memories of personal experience. To me, that’s a little bit like sending and receiving postcards.”
