second nature [l.t.]
“One day they will agree with him and it will be clearer that he, before anybody else, had seen ahead into the future, ahead of his times.” These are the words Jacques Derrida uses to describe the peculiar figure of the lawyer Gerardo Marotta, a Neapolitan patron of the arts and president of the Italian Institute for Philosophical Studies. He is a contemporary humanist who has been fighting to spread culture as a necessary instrument to achieving social justice, contributing by creating thousands of scholarships. But to really understand what this lawyer’s work means, we have to start with his youth’s civil passion, born in the aftermath of war.

“Meeting Gerardo Marotta means being overwhelmed by his enthusiasm, his radical commitment, and his heroic fury. […] His speeches on the Humanistic and Enlightenment traditions in Southern Italy, on the 1799 revolution and how it spurred the Italian Risorgimento have been repeated over the years like a mantra, bringing us back to the Crocean idea that history is always contemporary, and that revolutions are essential (even when they fail) to stimulate future generations to do better.”
