Ze is fifty years old and works as a guard at Lisbon’s port; his dream is to leave his wife and the squalid house they live in and to embark on one of the gleaming ships he sees every day. Everybody thinks these are the pipedreams of a man who will die right there in the port, but Ze starts to save his money and chooses the ship which will take him to Sweden, and only reveals his plan to a mute colleague. But one evening, when he returns home from work, he discovers that his wife has spent all his savings.“What is important is for the audience to identify with the character’s loneliness and with his inability to communicate through the permanent chatter that surrounds him. I want people to understand that Ze has a dream. Let’s forget about his motivations, his psyche, the object of his desire; and concentrate on one thing: the universal need to transcend reality with fantasies. They aren’t always right the living, the ones that stay. Maybe they know it. Maybe one day it will make them cry. Anyway, this is what I like to think.”

Basil da Cunha
Basil Da Cunha (1985), after self-producing his first shorts, joined the production company Thera, with which he made various films, including A côté, which was selected to compete for the Vila do Conde award for best Portuguese film. Sunfish was presented at the 2011 Quinzaine des réalisateurs in Cannes, where the next year he participated with Os Vivos Tambem Choram, winner of the Illy Award. He is presently completing his film studies at the Geneva School of Art and Design.
