QUARTET

QUARTET
by Dustin Hoffman
Country: UK
Year: 2012
Duration: 95'

A show for Verdi’s anniversary is prepared every year at Beecham House, a nursing home for musicians in the English countryside. Among the performers are Cecily, Reggie and Wilfred, once members of a quartet which also included Jean, Reggie’s ex-wife. It is thus a surprise for the three when they discover the new resident at the villa is actually Jean, the opera diva. The occasion is a perfect one for reuniting, but she refuses to perform: each one of them will take part in convincing her, with Reggie, drawn back into their stormy relationship, trying most of all.

Biography

film director

Dustin Hoffman

Dustin Hoffman (Los Angeles, CA, USA, 1937) worked in modest Broadway productions before being noticed by Mike Nichols during a theatre show, thus obtaining his first big booking with The Graduate (1967), which got him an Oscar nomination. Since then he has performed in films like Midnight Cowboys (1969) by John Schlesinger, which gave him another Oscar nomination, Little Big Man by Arthur Penn, Straw Dogs (1971) by Sam Peckinpah until he won the Oscar he had often brushed against with Kramer vs. Kramer (1979) by Robert Benton. Other top performances followed, up to his second statuette, obtained in 1988 with Rain Man by Barry Levinson. Amongst the various prizes he garnered, in 1996 the Venice Film Festival awarded him with its career achievement Golden Lion and three years later the American Film Institute gave him a tribute for the entirety of his work. Quartet represents his debut as a director.

Declaration

film director

“I think the best directors are actors because they have more sensitivity. Directors are often a thousand miles away, busy trying to get everything ready, getting the scene to be perfect, while the actors wait. Instead, I believe the fairest thing a director may do for an actor is to let him make mistakes. Mistakes and trying again, and so on, leaving him all the time the others have had to prepare the scene: allowing him to have a wellbeing space.”
