Roubaix, a city with an industrial past, is today one of France’s most destitute areas. During six months of shooting in public places, the director asked the townspeople to think of one or more things they had been told in the past and that had somehow changed them. Using thirteen sequence shots, she then constructed a map of the city’s transformations, creating a study of the dynamism of individuals, a relational project in an urban community, and an example of film in the sense of a public space.

Declaration

film director

“How are we transformed every day by the words of theothers? And how our own words act on them? Words become a trace of these mutual changes and thelistening turns into the central experience of this film, both in its making and in its vision. The listeningsupports the sight, and the sight supports the listening: in between the extraneousness of thelandscapes and the intimate closeness of the voices, the ambiguous space of the singular/pluralidentity is offered to the experience of the public.”
