Francesco and Giovannino, two vagabonds from Rome's suburbs who are constantly famished and in search of food, are arrested by mistake and taken to prison. There, they met the Maestro, a bum who is specialized in eating his fill at restaurants and taverns and then running away without paying. Once they get out of prison, the three join forces and have a series of adventures and misadventures in search of food, involving feasts, real or imaginary, vomiting, failed attempts to freeload lunches and dinners, and the risk of being lynched or poisoned. Gradually, they are joined by other people who are also desperate and starving, until they meet a holy man who gives them all a bit of hope...
