Budd Boetticher

Oscar «Budd» Boetticher è nato nel 1916 a Chicago. Dopo aver giocato a football americano da professionista ed essersi trasferito in Messico per dedicarsi alla tauromachia, esordisce a Hollywood nel 1941 come supervisore di Sangue e arena di Rouben Mamoulian. Lavora fino al 1951 come aiuto-regista e regista nel più assoluto anonimato, poi Bullfighter and the Lady gli frutta un contratto con la Universal e successivamente con la Batjac di John Wayne. I sette assassini (1956), primo dei suoi sette western con Randolph Scott, ottiene un buon successo commerciale e lo fa conoscere alla critica francese, che lo esalta. Il ciclo comprende anche Decision at Sundown (1957), The Tall T (1957), Buchanan Rides Alone (1958), Westbound (1958), Ride Lonesome (1959) e Comanche Station (1960). Tutti i film hanno per tema la vendetta di un cavaliere solitario. Tra i collaboratori fissi di Boetticher, si ricordano l'attrice Karen Steele - sua moglie -, lo sceneggiatore Burt Kennedy e l'operatore Lucien Ballard. Dopo il pregevole gangster-movie Jack Diamond gangster (1960), Boetticher torna in Messico per realizzare un documentario sul torero Carlos Arruza. Rimasto senza denaro, divorzia, finisce in carcere e poi in manicomio. Arruza, intanto, muore in un incidente d'auto e il film non viene distribuito. Nel 1967 ritorna con A Time for Dying, finanziato dall'eroe di guerra Audie Murphy, ma non riesce a riconquistare il successo. Nel 1970 scrive il soggetto di Two Mules for Sister Sara di Don Siegel, interpretato da Clint Eastwood e Shirley MacLaine. La sua ultima apparizione è stata in qualità di attore nel film Tequila Connection (1988) di Robert Towne.
