Finché non incontra Maude, scultrice ottantenne attaccatissima alla vita. Commedia necrofila e surreale sulla libertà di essere se stessi, interpretata da Bud Cort (il Brewster McCloud di Altman) e Ruth Gordon (grande sceneggiatrice hollywoodiana, con il marito Garson Kanin). Seconda regia di Ashby, con musiche di Cat Stevens.

Hal Ashby
William Hal Ashby è nato a Ogden, nello Utah, nel 1930. Abbandonata la scuola a 17 anni, si trasferì a Los Angeles e fu assunto alla Universal come ciclostilatore al reparto sceneggiature. Dalla seconda metà degli anni '50 si dedicò al montaggio, diventando capo montatore nel 1965. Nel 1970 esordì nella regia con The Landlord.
