È il ritratto
dell'attrice Sofia Loren, pensato per una grossa televisione americana, che la
racconta come una star planetaria alla stregua di Marilyn Monroe o Elizabeth
Taylor.... Alcune scene del documentario sono ambientate nella villa fuori Roma
dell'attrice e di Carlo Ponti, mentre la Loren prova abiti eccentrici e fa
smorfie, come in molti video amatoriali. E' la testimonianza di un'intimit` che
pervade tutta la pellicola, anche nel momento in cui Sofia Loren riceve la
telefonata che le annuncia la vittoria agli Oscar. La maggior parte della
narrazione è in prima persona, mentre parla dell'infanzia e spiega come lei e la
madre avessero deciso di trasferirsi da Napoli a Roma grazie al premio di 50
dollari vinto a un concorso di bellezza. Diventando un'attrice, è poi risuscita
a realizzare i suoi sogni e le ambizioni della madre.
«Questo è un
documentario autobiografico, riuscito più di altri perché non è una storia
cronologica, ma il ritratto di un'attrice e di una donna» (M. Stuart).

Mel Stuart
Nel corso degli anni, Mel Stuart ha diretto e prodotto più di 150 documentari. Tra questi possiamo ricordare Four Days in November, Wattstax e la reality series Ripley's Believe It or Not, con Jack Palance. Ha inoltre realizzato numerosi film per la televisione, come The Triangle Factory Fire Scandal e Ruby and Oswald e lungometraggi quali Willy Wonka e la fabbrica di cioccolato (Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory). E'attualmente impegnato nella produzione di una serie sulla poesia americana.
