The birth of a passion, the lightning bolt, a film that sparked a vocation, the "debt" that the cinema of today pays to the cinema of the past and its maestros. This is the spirit of the section Sons and Lovers.
Every year some important Italian directors, representing different generations, trends and expressive and thematic lines, are asked to choose a film from the past which was fundamental in catalyzing their inspiration and their desire to become a filmmaker. They are free to choose between
directors, genres and decades as they propose the work of an author whom they also recognize as a role model.
After their chosen film screening, each director will share the moment of that discovery with the public of the Torino Film Festival, discussing the ties they have with the film and its director, the influence it has had on their filmmaking, the interest and the inspiration it still sparks in them. In 2009 the directors were Marco Bellocchio, Davide Ferrario, Matteo Garrone, Mario Martone, Paolo Sorrentino and Gianni Zanasi.
