Algeria Francia 2013 (DCP, 77', )
A group of children is playing in the sand and the waves on a beach in Algeria. Around them, a drama of historical dimensions is unfolding: their country is in flames, devastated by the war between nationalist troops and the French army. Through the children’s imagination and carefree gaiety, the tragedy assumes the contours of a game, in which stealing food from the French soldiers is a pastime more than a need. But the world of adults will soon demand its toll of blood.
“It is not a movie about heroism at all. And I did not want that either. It was mainly a job with children, as much when we were acting as when showing them. No leader here! Some of them may stand out, but never for long. I can say that the childhood, that they all have in common, is the hero of the movie, but I don’t want to say that either. Maybe because heroes die at the end of the movies and sacrifice themselves in real life, while childhood should never die or be sacrificed, so no need of a hero.”
